Yeah, that's right. A month ago, I said I would not feel comfortable getting my own apartment. Well, guess what. I am getting my own apartment. Apparently, writing about your problems is the thing to do, and, in my case, that is a very good thing!
Let's start two weeks ago. Monday. I had an interview for a personal assistant. Now, when I am interviewing a potential PA, not only do I have to figure out if they are reliable and would do a good job, I have to figure out if we can get along and not get on each other's nerves, because we are going to be working so closely. I had a good vibe about her, I hired her on the spot, she came to my house to do the paperwork, and that was that. She started training this weekend, but unfortunately, was sick today. Hopefully she will be feeling better tomorrow.
Two weeks ago. Wednesday. Even though I have found a PA, I met with the Spina Bifida Association. My friend told me if I was closer, they would be able to help me with my personal care, and I just wanted to find out more about the services. Well, it turns out the services they have are AWESOME! They will be able to come and go whenever I need help, help me with errands, and even have somebody at night I could call with lifeline. It's everything I have been looking for for the past three years.
After our meeting, they took me to see an apartment of one of the people they help. It was nice, but I wanted something a little less expensive. It was also a two bedroom, and both of the bedrooms were a little tight to get into with my chair. My mom and I went home and did some research. We couldn't really find anywhere else that was as close, nice, and accessible as I would have liked.
Saturday, a week ago, I called the first apartment again and asked to see the one bedroom. My dad and I went up that day. The bedroom was a straight shot from the living room, a lot easier for my chair. The only problem now? The bathroom. The apartments have bathtubs. I need a shower that I can wheel my shower chair in.
I spent the week debating and calling around and Friday, I had a contractor come out from Accessible Dreams, an organization in Pittsburgh that makes homes accessible. He is able to do the bathroom! He is going to draw something up, the apartment is going to approve it, and hopefully I will be good to go.
This all happened so fast! I feel absolutely insane!
Until my next crazy adventure...
